Rayner Tan: The Viral Gen Z Who Swapped Canteen Duty for a Bedroom Window Cafe

If you are on TikTok, you have probably seen Rayner Tan. The 27-year-old became an internet sensation earlier this year, not for doing dance challenges, but for toasting prata and playfully “educating” primary school kids on basic manners at his Mee Toh School canteen stall.

However, the former engineer has officially hung up his apron at the school. Following a viral video incident—where he gently corrected a student for tossing money at him—a complaint was lodged, leading to the removal of his content.

While the incident played a small part in his departure, Rayner admits the main reason was financial: the S$15 monthly rent was unbeatable, but the tight margins on S$2 meals made sustaining the business tough.

Now, he’s pivoting to a new venture that is literally closer to home.

From School Canteen to Corner Pane
Rayner has transformed his ground-floor HDB bedroom window in Punggol into Corner Pane, a charmingly DIY home-based cafe.

Passersby at Block 645 Punggol Central will find a small window opening out to a patch of grass, complete with a makeshift walkway and handmade menu boards. It’s a whimsical setup where neighbors and social media fans can order drinks directly through his window.

What’s on the Menu?
Rayner’s time volunteering in Japan inspired his love for matcha and coffee, and he’s brought those skills back to the heartlands. Using a WPM espresso machine and ceremonial-grade matcha from Uji and Jeju, here is what you can expect:

  • Matcha Latte (S$5): Smooth, earthy, and not overly milky.
  • Strawberry Matcha Latte (S$6): A fan favorite featuring house-made strawberry puree.
  • Iced Latte (S$4): A floral, tangy brew using an Arabica-Robusta blend.
  • Wonton Nachos (S$4): Fried wonton skins served with salsa and garlic aioli.
  • Speculoos Banana Chia Pudding (S$4.50): A creamy, crunchy dessert-breakfast hybrid.

What’s Next?
While his income has taken a hit compared to his engineering days—dropping from ~S$5,000 to around S$1,000–S$3,000—Rayner isn’t giving up on his F&B dreams just yet. He is currently scouting for a proper shop space to open a “cafe-style stall” as early as mid-December.

Until then, you can catch him at his window.
