If you have been eyeing a luxury sedan or a larger SUV, the cost of hitting the road just got significantly steeper.
The latest COE bidding exercise wrapped up on Wednesday (Nov 19) with a mixed bag of results, but the headline story is a massive price hike for Category B vehicles, even as small car premiums cooled off slightly.
Here is the full breakdown of the latest prices:
| Category | Vehicle Type | Current Price (S$) | Previous Price (S$) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cat A | Cars (up to 1600cc & 130bhp) | $109,000 | $110,002 | ▼ 0.9% |
| Cat B | Cars (above 1600cc or 130bhp) | $129,890 | $115,001 | ▲ 12.9% |
| Cat C | Goods Vehicles & Buses | $76,389 | $76,000 | ▲ 0.5% |
| Cat D | Motorcycles | $8,729 | $8,600 | ▲ 1.5% |
| Cat E | Open Category | $125,001 | $121,010 | ▲ 3.3% |
The Big Jump: Category B
The fiercest competition this round was for larger, more powerful cars. Category B premiums skyrocketed by nearly 13 per cent, closing at a hefty S$129,890. That is a jump of nearly S$15,000 from the previous round, making it the most significant mover of the day.
The Silver Lining: Category A
There was a tiny bit of relief for those looking to buy compact cars. Category A premiums dipped slightly, falling just below the S$110k mark to close at S$109,000.
The Bottom Line
Demand is still outstripping supply. The bidding exercise attracted 4,568 bids for just 3,187 available certificates.
In response to the elevated prices—particularly the surge in the Open and Large Car categories—the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a reminder to car buyers and dealers to exercise “prudence” when placing their bids.
